Route 86
Marvelle, New Jersey
Samantha Ingrum was running late for her appointment; she sped down Route 86. She was weaving in and out of the three-lane highway. She couldn’t miss it, or she would have to wait another six months for an appointment. She was making good time until she got a flat tire this morning. Now she was rushing, and people wanted to drive like Miss Daisy.
Her phone rang. She quickly glanced at it, sucked her teeth, and rolled her eyes. It was her sister calling to annoy her. She knew her mother’s call would be next, then her dad’s. This was her decision. Her whole family thought she was stupid and desperate. This is what she wanted, and she was going through with it.
The phone kept ringing. She reached for it to throw it, but saw the brake lights in her peripheral vision. She looked up, gripped the wheel, and slammed on the brakes. The car kept moving, and she heard the crunch of metal give way as she hit her head on the steering wheel.
She felt her body shaking and heard a deep, soft voice in the distance.
“Miss?” he shook her again.
Samantha slowly lifted her head off the steering wheel. Her vision cleared. She turned toward the deep, soft voice. Green eyes looked at her.
“Are you okay?” he asked, reaching through the window and pressing the button to unlock the door. He opened it. “I’ll help you out.”
He grabbed her around the waist and helped her out of the car. He steadied her on her feet.
She held on to him and looked at her watch. “Shit, I’m late. I need to go now. I’m sorry I crashed into you, but I need to go.”
“You’re bleeding.”
Cars honked and sped past.
“I’ll live. You’re okay, right?” she asked, looking around.
“Yes, but I’m more concerned with how you are.”
She stopped looking around and actually looked at him.
“OH, MY GOD. Your…your Weaver Fence. Jesus, I ran into Weaver Fence.” She started pacing. “You’re my favorite actor.”
He smiled. His phone rang, and he pulled it from his pocket to see who it was. She saw the name before he brought it to his ear. Her mouth dropped open. No way it couldn’t be.
“Hello. Yes, this is Weaver. I’ve been in an accident. I’m not going to make it in.”
“I was calling to see if you could come later today around 2 pm because the doctor is stuck in traffic.”
Samantha’s phone rang again. She reached inside the car to retrieve it. They were calling her too. This could not be a coincidence. She answered it and leaned against her car. “Yes, this is Samantha.”
“We rescheduled your appointment for 2 pm today. Is that okay?” the woman on the line asked.
Samantha stared at Weaver. “Yes, that will be fine.”
She slowly lowered her phone and looked at Weaver again. “You’re going to be the father of my baby.”
