Prompt Friday: Missing Time

Alt text: A tired Black woman sits in her car at night, looking cautiously up at a police officer standing beside her open window as flashing police lights illuminate the dark road.

Welcome to Another Exciting Prompt Friday!

Write this scene. You’ve had a week’s worth of sleepless nights. You nearly get in an accident. You pull over on the side of the road. You go to sleep as the cars whiz by. You wake up to see a cop at your window. The cop offers to let you stay at his or her house so you can get some sleep. Do you trust the cop or take your chances on the road?

Hannah Grant heard the blaring of horns. Where were they coming from? The horns grew louder. She heard shouting, but where was it coming from? She felt her arms jerk. Her eyes flew open. A car was about 25 feet in front of her, and she was going 40 miles per hour. She slammed on the brakes, the car rocking to a stop an inch from the car in front of her.

Her heart nearly jumped out of her chest. Her hands were still gripping the wheel, trying to catch her breath.  A car next to her; the driver was giving her the finger and shouting obscenities. She closed her eyes and let out a deep breath. The traffic started moving. When it was clear, Hannah got over and pulled alongside the road. She shut the engine off. She leaned the seat back and drifted off.

A voice. It was faint—a tapping sound. The voice got louder. The tapping got harder. Then banging. Hannah’s eyes slowly opened. She blinked a few times to clear her vision. She turned toward the window to see a large man. He was banging on her window. He was saying something to her, but her ears weren’t registering what he was saying.

He tried to open the door. He banged on the window again. She was still trying to get her bearings. Where was she? Where had she been going? Why was she so exhausted?

“Are you okay? Open the door?”

Her vision cleared, but she was still a little disoriented. The banging got more aggressive.

“Open the door!”

She just stared at this large man. She had to think about where she was going.

“Please, are you okay?”

Now she was registering what he was saying. He was trying to see if she was okay. Should she open the door? She started the engine instead, then rolled the window down.

“Miss, are you okay?”

“Uh…no…uh…no. I’m exhausted. I almost got into an accident, so I pulled over.”

“That’s good. Are you feeling ill at all?”

“No, just extremely exhausted. I’ve had trouble sleeping.”

“I know how that could be. I’m a detective, and I had a tough case last night. What’s your name?”

“Hannah, and yours?”

“Dewier Ingram.”

She smiled at him.

“I’ve had a long day, and I’m exhausted too. How about you come to my place and sleep? That way you are safely off the road. I don’t trust putting you in an Uber. Not in your condition.”

“You’re exhausted too.”

“Not nearly as exhausted as you. I’m still well alert. Thank God for that; otherwise, who knows where you can end up. It will be safer for both of us.”

She looked around her car as if that would give her an answer. He seemed nice and concerned, but the world was full of crazy people. What if he wasn’t actually a cop?

“Can I see some identification?”

He frowned at her for a brief moment. Then he retrieved his credentials and showed them to her. She stared at them for a moment longer.

“I’m going to shower and crawl into bed. You look like you can really use the rest.”

She looked at him. No smiling. She huffed. She couldn’t believe she was considering this. He was a stranger. An attractive stranger but definitely a stranger.

“What am I going to do about my car?”

“I’ll call dispatch and let them know you’ll pick it up tomorrow. Or I can get it towed to my house. I know a guy he’d do it free of charge.”

She contemplated. “Fine.” She rolled up the window, shut off the engine, and grabbed her purse.

“Come on, let’s get you some sleep.”

They started walking to his car, and Hannah took one more glance back then continued to follow him to his car. He opened the door for her, and she got in. A smile quirked up at the corner of his mouth. He got behind the wheel, started the engine, and took off down the road.

Hannah shifted because something was off. She felt like she was raised slightly off the bed. She was lying on something not actually hard nor soft. She opened her eyes. She was in a bedroom, but she was raised off the bed. She was lying on a body. A naked body. The sound of a thump, thump in her left ear.

She raised her body and looked at the sleeping man. What the hell happened? How long was she asleep? Why the hell was she lying naked on top of the naked detective? Did she black out or something?

A deep, authoritative voice pulled her from her thoughts. “Hey, babe. How did you sleep?”
