Do you include interracial relationships in your stories? If so, why?
In many of my novels, I explore interracial relationships because they add depth, richness, and variety to my storytelling. I love diversity, and I enjoy telling stories about people from different backgrounds.
For me, writing about interracial couples feels natural. In life, we often connect with people regardless of race. Some characters reflect that reality—they meet, they click, and that’s what matters. Sure, some may have concerns about how others perceive their relationship, while others adopt an “I love who I love” mindset. But in my stories, it’s not always about tackling social issues—it’s often about the chemistry between the characters.
Most of my novels include at least one interracial relationship—some even more. I don’t usually plan it in advance; these connections just happen as I develop the characters. I believe that makes the relationships feel more authentic. My inspiration comes from growing up around diverse communities and having family members in interracial marriages. I have been in two interracial relationships and have two children from one of them. That real-life influence shapes my writing in a genuine way.
I enjoy writing these relationships, but I also love developing the individual characters. Their unique personalities, backgrounds, and dynamics drive the story.
Do you enjoy writing interracial couples? Do you have a favorite book that features one? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear your thoughts.
